Training
Traffic Signal Operations Training
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon; 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
$50 ITS Texas/ITE member | $75 Non-ITS Texas/ITE member
Limited to 100 participants.
There will be a break for lunch on your own.
This class is intended to provide not only what values to use setting up your traffic signal timing program, but more importantly, why. Being able to visualize the operations of the controller through data has made a difference in how we program controllers now. This nuts-to-bolts traffic operations class has been updated to demonstrate and explain traffic operations concepts visually using high-resolution controller data. The class will start with basic timing concepts in the morning and progress to more complex advanced controller features in the afternoon. It will address both the safety as well as efficiency issues in traffic signal operations. There should be something for all who want to take the next steps in traffic signal operations.
Designing Streets for People Workshop
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
$50 ITS Texas/ITE member | $75 Non-ITS Texas/ITE member
Limited to 100 participants.
This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to planning and design principles, techniques, and examples for creating multimodal streets which are safer for people or all ages and abilities and result in context-sensitive, people-centric, and inclusive places. Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Demonstrate an empathetic understanding of the needs of people to travel both along and across streets regardless of age or ability or mode of travel.
- Integrate safety and quality of life initiatives and applications into the basic thought processes of planning and design.
- Identify proven safety countermeasures and recognize the opportunities for their implementation.
- Formulate and develop conceptual designs for multimodal, people-centric streets and roadway networks and articulate their need.
- Showcase independent and creative thinking informed by state of the practice resources.
Attendees will be divided into teams. Using a hypothetical community-wide land use design plan and accompanying transportation plan and small area plan, each team will develop two or three prototypical corridor cross sections and two or three prototypical intersections. The cross sections and intersections must support multimodal travel along, across and around the roadway network and facilitate activation of the adjacent land uses. Intersections may be signalized or unsignalized, as context desires, including modern roundabouts and other innovative intersections. These conceptual designs, along with parameters, assumptions, findings, and issues, will be shared and discussed at the end of the workshop in a brief presentation by each team.
Attendees are asked to bring their laptop computers to access online source materials which will be presented in the workshop and to assist with the workshop’s hands-on assignment. While some will be provided, attendees may wish to bring their own drawing supplies and drafting equipment. Tracing paper and scale aerials will be provided for each team. An LCD projector will also be provided for presentations.
Please leave “standard designs” at home. Instead, bring your fertile imagination and a willingness to be innovative and transformative!
